CFR 185A - Respirable Crystalline Silica
On March 25, 2016, OSHA revised Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 1910.1053 (General Industry), 1915.1053 (Shipyard Employment) and 1926.1153 (Construction) to add new substance-specific standards for occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica. Concomitantly, revisions were made to 29 CFR 1910.1000 - Air contaminants, Table Z-3 - Mineral Dusts, to 29 CFR 1915.1000 - Air contaminants, Mineral Dusts table, and to Appendix A of 29 CFR 1926.55 - Gases, vapors, fumes, dusts, and mists to reference the applicability of the existing permissible exposure limit for each part. These revisions resulted in an error in the formulas for calculating the crystalline quartz permissible exposure limit and threshold limits, respectively, in these standards. OSHA published a correction to these formulas on May 18, 2016 (Federal Register). The N.C. Commissioner of Labor adopted this final rule with an effective date of September 2, 2016.
