Industries with high potential exposures include construction work, smelter operations, radiator repair shops, lead-acid battery recycling, and firing ranges. In construction, workers can be exposed to lead during renovation and demolition of painted buildings, during maintenance and demolition of lead pipes, soldering work, and other work involving lead metal or alloys. In general industry, workers may come in contact with lead in solder, plumbing work, rechargeable batteries, lead bullets, leaded glass, brass, or bronze objects, and radiators.
Safe Work Practices
- Follow the hierarchy of controls whenever possible; elimination, substitution, and use engineering and administrative controls.
- Conduct a PPE hazard assessment.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the job or task; clean PPE after use.
- Follow established policies and procedures including good housekeeping practices.
- Use ventilation whenever possible.
- Do not eat or drink in contaminated areas.
- Ensure contaminated clothing is removed before leaving the premises.
- Ensure training covers safe work practices.
