Workplace exposures to hexavalent chromium occur mainly in welding and other types of "hot work" on stainless steel and other metals that contain chromium, in the use of pigments, spray paints and coatings and when operating chrome plating baths.
Safe Work Practices
- Follow the hierarchy of controls whenever possible; elimination, substitution, and use engineering and administrative controls.
- Conduct a PPE hazard assessment.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the job or task; clean PPE after use.
- Follow established policies and procedures including good housekeeping practices.
- Use ventilation whenever possible.
- Do not eat or drink in contaminated areas.
- Ensure contaminated clothing is removed before leaving the premises.
- Training should cover all safe work practices and procedures.
