Workers have exposure to silica during activities such as abrasive blasting with sand, sawing or drilling into concrete, during the manufacturing of concrete blocks and stone countertops as well as during the cutting or crushing of stone.
Safe Work Practices
- Follow the hierarchy of controls whenever possible; elimination, substitution, and use engineering and administrative controls.
- Conduct a PPE hazard assessment.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the job or task; clean PPE after use.
- Follow established policies and procedures including good housekeeping practices (i.e., HEPA vacuum, wet methods).
- Use ventilation whenever possible.
- Do not eat or drink in contaminated areas.
- Ensure contaminated clothing is removed before leaving the premises.
- Training should cover all safe work practices and procedures.
