Workers with the highest potential for exposures include those working in secondary smelting and refining (recycling electronic and computer parts, metals) operations and in beryllium manufacturing, along with abrasive blasters and welders.
Safe Work Practices
- Follow the hierarchy of controls whenever possible; elimination, substitution, and use engineering and administrative controls.
- Conduct a PPE hazard assessment.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the job or task; clean PPE after use.
- Follow established policies and procedures including good housekeeping practices (HEPA vacuuming, wet mopping).
- Use ventilation whenever possible.
- Do not eat or drink in contaminated areas.
- Ensure contaminated clothing is removed before leaving the premises.
- Ensure training covers safe work practices.
