Safe Work Practices
Each employee needs to be instructed in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to his work environment to control or eliminate any hazards or other exposure to illness or injury. This includes but is not limited to:
- Ensure all employees are properly trained on work practices, procedures and measures related to steel erection including fall protection, rigging, hoisting, and falling object protection.
- Provide for site planning and site layout.
- Pre-plan for overhead hoisting operations.
- Provide for falling object protection and secure loose items that are aloft when not in use.
- Develop and follow the site-specific steel erection plan.
- Ensure that all safe work practices and procedures are being followed including those for connectors, rigging and controlled decking zones.
- Provide personal protective equipment and ensure that they are being worn properly.
Training Requirements
A training program must be provided to ensure employee participation in the steel erection training program. The program shall include training and instruction by a qualified person in the following areas:
- Recognition and identification of fall hazards in the work area.
- Use and operation of guardrail systems (including perimeter safety cable systems), personal fall arrest systems, positioning device systems, fall restraint systems, safety net systems, and other protection to be used.
- Correct procedures for erecting, maintaining, disassembling, and inspecting the fall protection systems to be used.
- Procedures to be followed to prevent falls to lower levels and through or into holes and openings in walking/working surfaces and walls.
Each employee who performs multiple lift rigging has been provided training in the following areas:
- Nature of the hazards associated with multiple lifts.
- Proper procedures and equipment to perform multiple lifts required by 1926.753(e).
Each connector must be provided training in the following areas:
- Nature of the hazards associated with connecting.
- Establishment, access, proper connecting techniques and work practices required by 1926.756(c) and 1926.760(b).
Where CDZs are being used, each employee must be provided training in the following areas:
- Nature of the hazards associated with work within a controlled decking zone.
- Establishment, access, proper installation techniques and work practices required by 1926.760(c) and 1926.754(e).
