On June 18, 1998, federal OSHA promulgated a final rule that corrected or eliminated provisions from various standards (Federal Register). These changes were made to correct out of date, duplicative, unnecessary, or inconsistent standards.

One of the changes concerns flammable and combustible liquids in construction (29 CFR 1926.152). Paragraph (a)(1) is amended to allow the use of either approved safety cans or DOT approved containers for the handling and use of flammable liquids in quantities of five (5) gallons or less. In addition, this revision permits the use of the original container for the storage, use and handling of flammable liquids in quantities of one (1) gallon or less.

The June 18, 1998, corrections and revisions were adopted verbatim with an effective date of October 8, 1998.
