Hand and portable powered tools can be hazardous and have the potential for causing severe injuries when used or maintained improperly. Injuries from hand tools are generally the result of improper maintenance or misuse of the tool.
Safe Work Practices
- Employees should be properly trained on the use of the equipment.
- Ensure the safe condition of tools and equipment used by employees, including tools and equipment which may be furnished by employees.
- Compressed air is not to be used for cleaning purposes except where reduced to less than 30 p.s.i. and then only with effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Wear appropriate PPE for the task being conducted.
- Follow established safe work practices and procedures.
- Stay focused on the task but be alert to your surroundings.
- Guards are not to be removed except when servicing the equipment.
- Remove faulty equipment from service and tag accordingly.
