Safe Work Practices for Steel Erection

Overview

Steel erection is the construction, alteration or repair of steel buildings, bridges and other structures, including the installation of metal decking and all planking used during the process of erection.

Safe Work Practices

Each employee needs to be instructed in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to his work environment to control or eliminate any hazards or other exposure to illness or injury. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Ensure all employees are properly trained on work practices, procedures and measures related to steel erection including fall protection, rigging, hoisting, and falling object protection.
  • Provide for site planning and site layout.
  • Pre-plan for overhead hoisting operations.
  • Provide for falling object protection and secure loose items that are aloft when not in use.
  • Develop and follow the site-specific steel erection plan.
  • Ensure that all safe work practices and procedures are being followed including those for connectors, rigging and controlled decking zones.
  • Provide personal protective equipment and ensure that they are being worn properly.
