  • Materials handling refers to the movement of materials in the workplace and may involve the use of mechanized equipment.

Hoists

  • A hoist is a device that is used to lift and lower a load or object that is generally heavy or awkward to carry. 

Safe Work Practices

Each employee must be instructed in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to his work environment to control or eliminate any hazards or other exposure to illness or injury. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Provide training to employees on use of hoists.
  • Comply with manufacturer specifications and limitations.
  • Ensure rated load capacities are posted along with hazard warnings and instructions.
  • Inspect and remove damaged hoisting ropes.
  • Post operating rules at hoist station.
  • Do not allow employees to ride on material hoists.
  • Ensure hoist way entrances are protected by gates and painted.
  • Ensure hoists are inspected and maintained weekly.
