Safe Work Practices for Chain Saws

Overview

A chain saw is a mechanical power-driven cutting tool with teeth set on a chain that moves around the edge of a blade.

Safe Work Practices

  • Each hand and portable powered tool, including each tool provided by an employee, must be maintained in serviceable condition.
  • Inspect all tools before initial use during each work shift. Note: If tool is not used, it does not need to be inspected.
  • Follow all maintenance and inspection procedures.
  • Chain saws must be equipped with a chain brake.
  • Chain saw kick back devices are not to be removed or otherwise disabled.

Refueling Chain Saws

  • Chain saws are to be fueled and started at least 10 feet from any open flame or source of ignition and fueling area.

Starting Chain Saws

  • Chain saws must be started on the ground or where otherwise firmly supported. Drop starting chain saws is prohibited.
  • Chain saws may be started from an upright position providing the chain saw is being firmly supported (i.e., log, stationary item).

Carrying Chain Saws

  • Chain saws must be carried in a manner that will prevent employee contact with the cutting chain and muffler (e.g., leather and felt shoulder pads.)

Retreating With Chain Saws

  • The chain saw must be shut off or the throttle released before the feller begins his retreat; feller may retreat as soon as throttle is released.
