Personal Protective Equipment for Arborists

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Provide appropriate eye, face, head, hand, ear protection and leg protection at no cost to employees.
  • Assure PPE is maintained in a "serviceable condition" and inspected before each use.
  • Repair and/or replace PPE that is not in a serviceable condition.
  • Ensure foot protection is chain saw cut-resistant.

Gloves

  • Employees that handle wire rope should wear gloves or have hand protection that provides adequate protection against puncture wounds, cuts and lacerations. Note: These gloves can be of cotton, leather or rubber as long as the gloves provide the type of protection required.

Leg Protection

  • Employees should use leg protection constructed of cut-resistant material any time they operate a chain saw. Note: Leg protection does not apply to employees operating a chain saw from a vehicular mounted elevating and rotating work platform.
  • Climbers are to wear leg protection unless it is a greater hazard that is posed by wearing the equipment in that particular situation. Note: It is upon the employer to demonstrate that it is a greater hazard to wear the leg protection.

Foot Protection

  • Foot protection must be worn by employees who operate a chain saw, including rubber, caulk-soled or other slip-resistant boots, and is chain saw cut-resistant. Note: Logging boots for chain saw operators must provide cut-resistant protection for the foot, not just the toe.

Hearing Protection

  • Employees should wear hearing protection when exposed to high noise levels.

Eye and Face Protection

  • Employees should wear appropriate eye and face protection when exposed to the potential for eye and face injury. Note: For chain saw operations, logger-type mesh face screens may also be worn.
  • Where both eye and face protection is necessary, the employee can also wear face PPE that protects the eyes and face and not separate PPE
