Labor Commissioner Luke Farley Presents Inaugural Worker of the Month Award

RALEIGH, NC
Nov 6, 2026

North Carolina Labor Commissioner Luke Farley presented the inaugural Worker of the Month Award to Kathleen Pitz, Business Officer and Assistant Chief of Career Services for the Northern Wake Fire Department, recognizing her outstanding dedication, professionalism, and commitment to supporting the people who serve her community.

Created by the North Carolina Department of Labor, the Worker of the Month Award celebrates North Carolina workers who demonstrate exceptional work ethic, dedication, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their workplace and community. Nominations for the award are submitted by members of the North Carolina General Assembly, who have the opportunity to recognize outstanding workers making a difference in their communities. The inaugural nomination recognizing Pitz was submitted by Representative Mike Schietzelt.

Pitz plays a vital role in the Northern Wake Fire Department, supporting more than 125 career and volunteer members through payroll and personnel administration, human resources, employee onboarding, benefits coordination, and organizational initiatives. Her work helps ensure the department has the resources, support, and administrative systems necessary to serve its community.

While firefighters and emergency responders are often the face of public safety, Pitz works behind the scenes to keep the organization running smoothly. Beyond her professional responsibilities, she is a trusted resource and source of encouragement for department members, offering guidance and support through both personal and professional challenges. Her compassion, discretion, and willingness to go above and beyond have helped foster a workplace culture where employees and volunteers feel valued and supported.

“North Carolina’s workforce is the backbone of our state’s economy, and every day, hardworking men and women go above and beyond to make our state a better place to live and work,” said Commissioner Luke Farley. “Kathleen is an outstanding example of the dedication and servant leadership this award was created to recognize. Her work may often happen behind the scenes, but her impact is felt throughout her organization and the community it serves. We are proud to recognize her contributions.”

The inaugural award marks the beginning of an ongoing effort by the Department to highlight the outstanding individuals who help keep North Carolina moving forward. The N.C. Department of Labor is proud to recognize Kathleen Pitz and workers across the state who exemplify excellence, dedication, and a commitment to doing their jobs well.
