Cambrex Corp.’s Durham facility was honored at a Carolina Star Recertification Ceremony on Tuesday, April 5. The award was presented during an event recognizing the Durham’s site achievement as Cambrex’s “Team of the Year.”. N.C. Department of Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson gave brief remarks and presented the acrylic star to management, the site safety team and employees.

“After the past few years, most of us are hungry for something good,” Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson said. “Your dedication to workplace safety and your long-term commitment toward maintaining your Carolina Star status – that’s something good and something to celebrate. It’s an honor to play a role in this partnership, and I thank you for going above and beyond for your coworkers each day.”

To be designated a Carolina Star site, the worksite is required to submit a Star Annual Report which includes annual Total Recordable Case (TRC) rate and Days Away, Restricted or Transferred (DART) rate data, safety and health management system evaluation, participate in Carolina Star Safety Conference planning meetings and provide mentoring to other companies. The site must also undergo periodic evaluations by the Star Program evaluation team.

“I am so proud of each of you for overcoming the challenges of the past few years and achieving such a significant safety record,” Doug Wilkinson, EHS manager, said. “With strong mentoring and guidance, you stepped up to the plate and not only met our goals, but you overachieved!”

The facility consists of two buildings comprising 103,000 square feet of workspace. Cambrex employs 136 workers, with a three-year average TRC rate 82% below the industry average and a DART case rate 100% below the industry average.

"Cambrex is honored to be identified with the Carolina Star certification at our Durham facility once again," Thomas Loewald, chief executive officer at Cambrex, said. "We are committed to investing in the capacity, capabilities and expertise needed to strengthen our position as a leading global CDMO which puts safety and health at the core of everything we do."

The Durham facility began participating in the Star program as a Rising Star site in 2013 and received its first recertification as a Carolina Star site in 2017. In a separate recognition from Cambrex, the Durham team was awarded the first annual “Cambrex Team of the Year” for their outstanding achievements in 2021. Over the course of the year, the Durham team enabled customers to improve the quality of life for patients around the world.
