Crawler Locomotive and Truck Cranes
Crawler Crane
- Consists of a rotating superstructure with power plant, operating machinery, and boom, mounted on a base, equipped with crawler treads for travel. Its function is to hoist and swing loads at various radii.
Locomotive Crane
- Consists of a rotating superstructure with power-plant, operating machinery and boom, mounted on a base or car equipped for travel on railroad track. It may be self-propelled or propelled by an outside source. Its function is to hoist and swing loads at various radii.
Truck Crane
- Consists of a rotating superstructure with powerplant, operating machinery and boom, mounted on an automotive truck equipped with a powerplant for travel. Its function is to hoist and swing loads at various radii.
Safe Work Practices
Each employee needs to be instructed in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to his work environment to control or eliminate any hazards or other exposure to illness or injury. This includes but is not limited to:
- Only designated and properly trained personnel are permitted to operate a crane.
- Load ratings are to be followed based on manufacturer specifications.
- Rating charts are to be clearly posted in each cab.
- All cranes and materials (i.e., ropes) are to be inspected before use and on a regular inspection schedule with records maintained.
- Operational tests are to be conducted per manufacturer specifications.
- Ensure routine and regular maintenance of each crane.
- All loads are to be handled per established procedures.
- Fire extinguishers are to be readily available and employees trained in their use.
